Student Choreography 2019-20
PTSA Reflections
Tentative Videotaping: Sept. 13th, 2:30-5:00p; 205
An arts competition sponsored by the National PTSA. Students create dances based on a particular theme. The 2019-20 theme is: Look Within. The dances are submitted and judged by the duPont Manual PTSA via video. Dances can progress from the school level all the way up to the national level and various awards/prizes are given. In 2015-16 YPAS Dance had two National winners! YPAS Dance provides a videotaping service for all choreographers who would like to enter. A run order of videotaping will be provided in advance. Students are welcome to leave when they are finished but must be present at 2:30 to hear instructions and help with set-up if needed. These dances are also performed at the Young Choreographers' Showcase in October. Open to any Manual student. Choreographers must be enrolled in Round 1 to participate.
Young Choreographers' Showcase
Refresher Rehearsals Oct 2nd and 3rd, various times after-school.
Tech Rehearsal: Oct 9th, 2:30-5:30p, Experimental Theatre
Dress Rehearsal: Oct 10th, 2:30-5:30p, Experimental Theatre
Matinee Performance: Oct 11, 2nd block, Experimental Theatre
Evening Performance: Oct 11, Dancers' call 6p, Performance 7p, Experimental Theatre
A public performance of student choreography in the YPAS Experimental Theater. The showcase is adjudicated live by local dance professionals who select up to 4 of the highest quality works to be performed in the fully produced New Works Festival. The showcase includes minimal tech and the theater is set in a thrust design with audience on three sides and there is no marley floor. Free for the public, seating is limited. Choreographers must be enrolled in Round 1 or Round 2 to participate.
H.S. Dance Festival
Videotaping: TBD Location TBD.
A choreography adjudication sponsored by the National High School Dance Festival. Dances are submitted via videotape to the festival where a panel of judges selects the highest quality dances to be performed at the festival. The 2019 Festival is being held at Pointe Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Schools may submit up to 4 dances and YPAS Dance usually reserves 1-3 of those spots for student work, with the other spots reserved for faculty or guest artist work. If several student choreographers create work then YPAS will hold its own in- house adjudication to select the works that will be sent. All choreographers and dancers must be attending the HS. dance festival if submitting a dance. These dances are also performed at the Young Choreographers' Showcase in October. Choreographers must be enrolled in Round 1 or Round 2 to participate.
New Works Festival
March- 1st weekend 5th and 6th
OR
March- 2nd weekend 12th and 13th
A school-wide, completely student-run, fully produced (lights/costumes/tech) show in the YPAS Experimental Theater. New Works presents original plays, musical compositions and dances all created by students. Selected dances are performed in either the 1st or 2nd weekend (availability taken into consideration-if possible). Performance commitment includes both a 10 am matinee and two 7:30pm evening performances. Tickets available for purchase at ypas.org. Participation for dance is by invitation-only to those pieces selected at the Young Choreographers' Showcase.
Spring Informance
April 20th, 6:30p
An informal showcase on the main-stage for second semester class work from dance major classes as well as student choreography. Free to the public. Choreographers must be enrolled in Round 3 to present a dance.
